Dog quarantine is a process where dogs entering a country are isolated for a specific period to ensure they do not bring in infectious diseases, particularly rabies. This is a crucial measure for countries that are free from certain diseases and want to maintain that status.

In Australia, the quarantine for dogs is a well-regulated process due to the country’s stringent biosecurity laws. Here’s what dog quarantine looks like in Australia:

Purpose of dog quarantine in Australia

  • Preventing Disease Introduction: The primary purpose is to prevent the introduction of diseases like rabies, which can have devastating impacts on the local animal population and public health.
  • Monitoring Health: During quarantine, dogs are monitored for any signs of illness and are given necessary vaccinations and treatments.
  • Ensuring Compliance: It ensures that imported dogs comply with Australia’s health standards, including being free of external and internal parasites.

Process of dog quarantine in Australia

  • Pre-Import Preparation:

Dogs must meet specific health requirements before being allowed into Australia. This includes vaccinations, treatments for parasites, and blood tests for certain diseases.

An import permit is required, and the dog must be microchipped.

Arrival in Australia:

  • Dogs are transported to an approved quarantine facility upon arrival. The main facility is located in Mickleham, Victoria.

Quarantine Period:

  • As of recent regulations, the standard quarantine period for dogs entering Australia is 10 days.
  • During this time, dogs are housed in secure, clean kennels and are provided with food, water, and exercise.
  • They are closely monitored by veterinary staff for any signs of illness or parasites.
  • Post-Quarantine:After successfully completing the quarantine period without showing signs of illness, dogs are allowed to leave the facility and be reunited with their owners.

How long is quarantine in Australia for dogs after they are Imported?

The quarantine period for dogs imported into Australia is typically 10 days, provided all pre-arrival requirements have been met and the dog shows no signs of infectious diseases during this time.

It’s important to note that the quarantine requirements and duration can vary depending on the country of origin, the health status of the dog, and compliance with Australia’s import regulations.

The downsides of qurantine and changing the place of residence

In our place where we keep dogs, we strictly take care that your dog is in good condition, we monitor what he likes to eat the most and that is what the dog is fed.
After changing the place of residence, accommodation and acclimatization, a dog that has lost a few kilos may need up to a couple of months to regain them.
We know from experience that when a dog comes to quarantine in Australia it loses up to a few kilograms, we try to put the dog on the plane for the flight to Australia with a few extra kilograms.
We had a case where a female Rottweiler refused food due to  stress and ended up on an infusion in Australia which could have cost her life and the owner And the owner had big expenses to cover.
Our warm recommendation is, if you are able to insure,  that the dog be fed in quarantine with the same dog food that he ate in our place a few months before the flight, That would save him from losing weight.
